The Free SignUpGenius Tool Makes Planning Your Party or Volunteer Event Easy

signupgenius logoI don’t know about you, but for me one of the most daunting tasks associated with hosting an event or party, is the organization.  Sending out invites and making sure that guests or participants aren’t bringing the same items, and all have the proper time and information can be more time consuming than you expect.

Doing these tasks online, and emailing guests/participants, can be a real time saver, but even this can be challenging to do without good organization.  Using a ready-made template can make the whole planning and implementation process much easier for your event.  The free event and volunteer organization service from SignUpGenius.com will make parties and events so much easier to manage.

SignUpGenius is all set up to help you put together your next, volunteer sign-up list, snack list, Potluck list or party RSVP.  The free tool is easy to use, and you can send out and keep track of everything right in one convenient place.  To show you how simple the process is I am going to set up a fictitious pot luck Halloween party, and walk you through the process.

After signing up for an account (this only takes about 30 seconds), I selected the Party Genius tool to help me organize the party.  as you can see below a six step process will complete everything.

online party item sign-up screen 1
In step one, you simply fill in your group and event names, and fill in a message to guests/participants.  Style and color of fonts can be readily changed, links can be added and several other customizations can be done.
holiday party theme choices for sign-up sheetThe second step gives you the choice of many templates to change out the overall look of the emails and organizational sheet.  This is just one page of the fall & winter themes.  There are not just more pages under this category, but there are twelve more categories to choose from.  You are sure to find something that will give you the perfect look for your event.  Just click your choice and hit continue.
setting time date location of partyTime, date, place and RSVP settings are set in the next step.
party items listThe fourth step is where you input the items you would like guests to bring, how many are needed, and any additional notes that might be helpful for guests.
Online party invitation and bring listYou then have the opportunity to preview what your emails will look like.  I love the way everything is concisely assembled on the page.
invite party guests onlineIn the final step, add the emails of the people you are inviting, select accessibility and whether you want to be notified of each sign-up, and choose whether guests can swap slots with each other.  Press the button and your savvy invites are delivered.

It is just as easy as this to organize volunteer sign-ups or assemble “to bring” lists.  Even if you just want to send out a party invite, without the need for task or item sign-up, this tool would be well worth using.  I am surprised this great tool is free to use. Not only is it free, but they also offer free planning resource articles with tips on coordinating volunteers for all types of events, and hold regular contests to engage and reward site users. .

Space Bags Review

space bag logo

Like most of you I have seen various Space Bag commercials what seems like a million times over the years.  While they always seemed like a great idea and something I could really use, I had never tried them.  Thus, I was happy to have the opportunity to  get some Space Bags to try out, for review.

I was sent a box full of Space Bags and a Portable Organizer, to put them in.  I have a ton of clothes and linens that needed to be put away for the summer, so this was perfect.  There were various sizes including  travel bags and To-go-bags.  The To-Go-Bags are great for travellers because they don’t require a vacuum to work.  After all what good would it be to fit the bags into your luggage, but not be able to repack when it is time to leave.

space bags review

The bags were certainly heavy duty, and had sturdy double channel ziplock closures.  I checked out the valve where the vacuum sucks out the air.  It is a simple yet effective concept.  A rubber flap opens due to the negative pressure created by the vacuum, so that the air can be sucked out.  When the vacuum nozzle is removed the flap automatically re-closes, sealing out the air.

I proceeded to get some clothes together, and start trying the bags.  The durable bags were easy to fill, without fear of tearing.  I opened the cap and set the vacuum nozzle on the valve.  I expected to stand there a minute, while the air sucked out.  That was not necessary.  The air was completely sucked out before I even realized it.  Wow, that was fast and easy.

The bags not only squished my clothing down to about a third it’s original size, but the items are all sealed up now.  I don’t have to worry about dust, moisture or odors getting on to them.  While I will still store them in a clean dry area, it does make more storage spots into options.  These would be perfect for storing uniforms and special occasion clothing, which don’t get worn all the time, but are important to their owners.

I did try out one of the To-Go-Bags since I was going to write up this review.  While it wasn’t quite as exciting and effective as the original Space Bags, it still functioned well and would come in very handy when travelling.

Verdict: In my opinion Space Bags are well worth the cost.  They are very reasonable priced, and do their job, just as described.

Getting Organized in 2010 : Mid-January Update

My resolution to get organized this year continues. I’ve decided to make this a twice monthly feature.   Some slow but steady progress has been made, in my fight over storage issues, over the past two weeks.

Getting my Schedule Organized

Since the end goal is to be organized in all areas by the end of the year, one of my small projects was finding a day planner that would  hold up in my purse and  I would actually use.  I found a small Day Runner in the pink ribbon selection at Staples, that I’m quite pleased with.  The outside is mostly black, but has cute stripes inside and a spot for business cards, most importantly, it seems sturdy enough to hold up to the wear & tear I’ll give it.  Once I pick up one of those giant wall calenders for my office, I should have the scheduling part of  “operation organization” covered.

In the Kitchen

After I’d tossed out anything in the pantry that was past date, or would end out just sitting around for another 6 months, I washed down all the shelves.  Rather than repainting them as I’ve done in the past, I lined them with contact paper.  It will be easier to maintain.

I still want to add a couple wire shelves, to improve the capacity, but the pantry is functioning better already.

  Toys

It may seem counter intuitive, to buy another toy, when you are having trouble keeping the ones you already have in check, but that is just what I did.  As I wrote about last week, I got a great deal on a Kid Kraft play kitchen, for my daughter.  While I did think it would be a fun addition to her room, and a toy she could grow into… I was looking at the storage potential it had.  I found it to be the perfect place to store her play food, tea set and a few odds & ends.

Get Out of my Life

It is amazing how much stuff you can accumulate in a house in 10 years.  Big Sisters is coming on Monday and so far I have 4 bags of clothes, 2 bags of toys and 1 of household items.  I’m sure I will come up with a few more bags tomorrow.

Getting rid of stuff can be hard for some of us.  I was raised in a “pack rat” household, and getting rid of items which still have value can be a bit hard for me.  Eventually I hope to be able to look on my stuff with a cold eye, and say do I love it or need it, if not it’s out, but I am still at the point of ridding myself of the things I either never really liked, or know I won’t use.  The tougher cuts will come later.  I live in a Victorian era home, and simply don’t have much storage.

I’m pleased with my progress so far, and am eager to continue on this organizational overhaul.  My new motto is…

“A place for everything and everything in it’s place” ~ Benjamin Franklin

Getting Organized in 2010

Things have gotten a bit disorganized around here lately, and I have decided that it will be my resolution to remedy the situation.  It occured to me that some of the other things I was considering as resolutions, might benefit from a more organized living space, so it  seemed the best place to start.

I started off yesterday, by going through my kitchen cupboards and tossing anything that had been around too long.  Today, I just tossed a few things I no longer “loved” into a donation box and went through some paperwork.  By the end of the week, I should be ready to start buying some storage, and other organizing tools.

My office will be my biggest project, since I have to plan for an expanding workload.  The other big challenge will be our spare bedroom, which has become a catch-all since renovation work on it came to a screeching halt a few years ago, when my husband broke his ankle, then I became pregnant.  We have vowed the room will be completed this spring, so that we can make it our master bedroom.

The biggest things I hope to get out of my organizational overhaul, are more effective use of my time and a more serene and easier to maintain living space.  I’ll be sharing  some of the projects and products used in this overhaul, though posts over the next few months.
