Loving Lampposts: A Frank Discussion on What It Means to Be Autistic

Loving Lamposts autism movie reviewLoving Lampposts is film which gives an encompassing view of autism.  The film looks at the differing viewpoints on what it means to be autistic, in a frank and open manner.  The filmmaker, Todd Drezner, is the father of an autistic child himself, so this film is not just a project for him, but also a quest for answers.

There are two seemingly very different viewpoints on autism.  The medical community and much of the general public see autism as a sickness, which must be fought and cured.  There is also a ‘neurodiversity’ movement, which proclaims autism is just a variation of the human brain, and should be accepted as such.  To them it is disrespectful to say autistic people should be cured.loving lamposts dvd review

Loving Lampposts presents the differing viewpoints from, parents of autistic children, the medical community and most importantly autistic adults.  From parents, there are discussions on how they have fought or come to accept autism.   Some children have indeed lost their autism diagnosis, others have not. Among the parents who have accepted that autism is the way their children are, they are still endeavoring to help their kids be the most they can be.  It is just their viewpoint which has changed.  The medical community takes a disease curing approach to autism.  Theorizing that if the underlying causes of the condition can be cured, the person will become “normal”.

Of the most interest to myself, and I would think most people who have a loved one with autism, were the interviews with autistic adults.  Many are proponents of the ‘neurodiversity’ movement.  They do not want to be treated as if they are damaged and sick.  They just want to be accepted as who they are.

I found Loving Lampposts to be a very thoughtful presentation.  As the mother of an autistic child, I sometimes feel a bit pulled between the cure vs. accept models.  As my daughter is still rather young, I am  focusing more on treatments that would be considered more in the “cure” camp, but for me the emphasis is more on helping her gain skills that will make her future life easier and more fulfilling.  Would I like her to lose her diagnosis, yes, but first and foremost I want her to be what makes her happy.  I guess that sort of puts me somewhere between these two camps.

Loving Lampposts came out on DVD March 29th.  It is now available for rent or purchase.  If you are the parent of an autistic child, an educator, or just someone who wants to better understand the “epidemic” of autism, I highly recommend this movie, from Cinema Libre Studio.

Meet the Fairies DVD Review and Giveaway

Meet the Fairies DVD review

Meet the Fairies is a soon to be released DVD, I was just sent for review.  The Fairies is an extremely popular children’s program from Australia.  This live action show features the fairy characters of Harmony and Rhapsody, who explore the colorful world of Fairy Land, which is very reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz’s  Lollipop Land.  The fairies also introduce us to their friends throughout the DVD, such as Barnaby the Buzzy Bee and  Wizzy the Wizard.  My daughter’s favorite character seems to be Elf the Fairy Cake Maker.  Elf is a hyperactive fellow who gets up at the crack of dawn, as his name indicates, to make cakes for the fairies.

The Meet the Fairies DVD is full of song and dance fun for preschool age children.  It is geared for the 2-5 year old age group.  My 3 1/2 year old liked the songs, and as I mentioned she found the Elf the Fairy Cake Maker character to be especially amusing.  The Fairies teach positive values and encourage children’s creativity through their songs and dances.  The DVD case for Meet the Fairies will really appeal to little girls who love all things fairy.  You can’t tell from the picture above, but it looks all glittery :)

The release date for Meet the Fairies is set for March 22, 2011.  It can be ordered directly off the NCircle website.  I also found it available for pre-order on sale at both Barnes & Noble and Walmart.

Felicity: An American Girl Adventure DVD Review and Giveaway

Felicity An American Girl Adventure DVD

To celebrate American Girl’s 25th anniversary, Warner Home Video just released the full-length live-action movie, Felicity: An American Girl Adventure. This is  a deluxe collectible edition. The main character of the film is Felicity Merriman, an independent spirited 10 year old girl,  living in Revolutionary Era Williamsburg, Virginia. Felicity: An American Girl Adventure Deluxe Edition was released today and retails for a SRP of $19.97.  Digital download is also available.

When Felicity meets Penny, a beautiful copper-colored mare, she knows with all her heart that she must free Penny from her cruel owner.  Felicity desperately wishes for that same sureness of heart about the rumors of revolution swirling through Williamsburg.  Felicity’s father believes that the colonies should be free from England’s rule, but her beloved grandfather and her best friend Elizabeth both support the king. With fiercely conflicting loyalties dividing the colonists, something as simple as a cup of tea could divide Felicity from her best friend forever. As Christmas time draws near, Felicity struggles to hold her family and friends close, and to find ways for love and friendship to rise above the growing conflict.

Felicity: An American Girl Adventure stars Academy Award®-winning actress Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock, Mystic River) as Mrs. Merriman, John Schneider (Smallville) as Mr. Merriman and Shailene Woodley (The Secret Life of the American Teenager) as Felicity Merriman.

Felicity: An American Girl Adventure is a heartwarming, inspirational film that tells a beautiful story set during Colonial times,” said Amit Desai, WHV Vice President of Family, Animation and Partner Brands Marketing. He added, “Felicity is a bright, courageous and endearing character that young girls, and viewers of all ages will enjoy.  We are delighted to release this wonderful family film in a new deluxe edition.”

This special deluxe edition contains the bonus features:

  • Women in Williamsburg – Felicity: An American Girl– An insider’s tour of Felicity’s world of Colonial Williamsburg, filmed in cooperation with The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.
  • All About Felicity, An American Girl
  • On Set with Felicity Exclusive behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Shailene Woodley (Felicity).
  • Felicity’s Williamsburg: Co-Stars Shailene Woodley and Katie Henney guide you through Felicity’s hometown, now a living-history museum you can visit today.

I enjoy period films, and watched this with my 3 year old daughter.  She liked the horses, but  she won’t really fully appreciate the movie for a few more years.  It certainly is an inspiring adventure for a young girl.

Tom and Jerry: Fur Flying Adventures – DVD Review & Giveaway

Tom and Jerry Fur Flying Adventures DVD Review

Who doesn’t love Tom & Jerry?  I have to admit I felt pretty bad for the cat, and rooted for him sometimes, but if he ever really succeeded at getting Jerry, well that wouldn’t have been very good would it.  If you want to bring back some great Warner Brothers cartoon nostalgia into your home to share with your kids, then this DVD will be just the thing for you.

The DVD is packed with 14 wild and funny Tom & Jerry shorts, from the golden age of animation.  Why not share a bit of our cultural heritage with your kids, they won’t even realize your doing it, to them it is just a funny cartoon.  Like most kid’s my daughter seemed to like to mouse best :)

Here is a little more information about the title:

In Tom and Jerry: Fur Flying Adventures, our favorite dueling duo travels through time in Guided Mouse-ille, to Europe in Neapolitan Mouse and into outer space on O-Solar-Meow. It’s two against one when Tom’s scaredy-cat cousin George comes to town in Timid Tabby.  Jerry comes up on top time and again in Pet Peeve, That’s My Mommy and Robin Hoodwinked. Other featured shorts include Barbecue Brawl, Happy go Ducky, Hic-cup Pup, Little Quacker, Rock ‘N’ Rodent, Pup on a Picnic and The Vanishing Duck.

Originally created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Tom and Jerry emerged during Hollywood’s golden age of animation and became one of the most popular cartoon series in existence. The shorts focus on the never-ending rivalry between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The plots of each short usually center on Tom’s attempts to capture Jerry. Jerry however, is clever and quick on his feet so Tom hardly ever manages to catch him.

The Tom and Jerry: Fur Flying Adventures DVD will be released and available in stores on Feb 8th. The SRP is $14.97, but Barnes & Noble has it available right now for just $8.69

The Excitement of Deadwood: Amazon Gold Box Deal, Today Only!

Deadwood Series

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of HBOseries. All opinions are 100% mine.

I am a little older than my typical reader, so I grew up on Western movies.  I was the age of the spaghetti Western.  Those were great movies, but after that era there was a big lull in the genre.  Luckily, for those of us who enjoy a good Old West story, The HBO series Deadwood quenches our thirst for Wild West adventure.

The series really conveys an air of excitement and danger. It conjures up images of the idyllic Wild West figures so many legends have been told about, like Jesse James, buffalo Bill and Billy the Kid.  It was an amazing time in American history, and while it had it’s dark side, it was certainly fascinating.

The era of the Old West was a time when technology clashed with a undeveloped land.  Our country was growing faster than orderliness could keep up.  Like a rambunctious teen their were a lot of growing pains and disobedience.  Deadwood takes you on a wild journey through this time of turmoil.

Now here is the good part. If you like the Deadwood series as much as I do, you want to see it for the first time, the series is available at Amazon as a Gold Box deal Today Only!  You will never get a better deal on this wonderful taste of the Wild West.  Remember this  deal will only be available on Feb 3
