Improving My Food Storage Habits for the New Year

food storage tips to avoid wasteOne of my New Year’s resolutions is to reduce food waste in my household.  This should not only save a bit of money, but also reduce our environmental footprint as well.

My worst offenses:

  • I have a bad habit of buying perishable vegetables, like bean sprouts, without a set plan to cook them that day.
  • I also make batches of things like roasted peppers, pop them in food storage containers, and “lose” them in the back of the refrigerator,  only to discover a “science project gone terribly awry”, in the future.
  • I’ve been guilty of buying the big packages of chicken on sale, and ending out throwing out about a 1/3 of the package, due to spoilage.
  • My daughter’s contribution to food waste, is her habit of grabbing a fresh piece of fruit, when she still has half of one left… life with a 4 year old.

So, how am I going to resolve this problem?

  • I have already resolved the issue with my daughter and her fruit obsession.  All the fruit goes in a large wooden bowl, and is placed in a cupboard, far from her reach.  While my daughter is mostly non-verbal, due to her autism, she has a fruit picture card she gives me to get some when she wants it.  She picks the piece she wants, and the bowl goes back up out of reach.
  • I will just have to hold myself back from buying produce that is quick to perish, unless I an going to cook it that day, or have an established plan to do so the next day.
  • I’ve started to put more leftover prepared items directly into the freezer.
  • I will do more frequent “fridge purges”, to avoid the “petri dish effect”… yeah, I am a little ashamed, to need that one.
  • I am going to start using that vacuum food storage bag system I bought a few months ago, instead of letting the box collect dust in the corner.  This will be great for when the larger packs of chicken are on sale.
  • I resolve to make sure produce trimmings actually make it to my tumbling composter, and not lazily tossed into the trash.
  • I’ve already started making smaller pizzas using 1/2 of a pound of dough, and smaller batches of pasta and rice.  As a family of 2 rather than 3 now, we simply don’t need that much.
  • Put the open jars of pasta sauce in a door shelf, so they don’t get shuffled to back of refrigerator.  This should prevent unwittingly opening a new jar, when one is already open.

Writing about food spoilage, made me think of the "Tiny Ugly Germs", from Yo Gabba Gabba... so I couldn't resist sharing them.

What are your tips for reducing waste and improving food storage, for the New Year?

Shiraleah Home and Fashion Accessories: Uncommonly Stylish

shiraleah logo

I hardly know where to start with my review of Shiraleah Home and Fashion Accessories.  I guess just saying, I love their products, would be a good starting point.  I was given the option to make a couple selections from their wholesale catalogue, and was very impressed with the uncommon style of the goods.  While so many things appealed to me, I decided to get a few items that would look nice in recipe shots, as well as, being useful in my household.

ruffled recycled glass dessert plate

I went directly to their tableware section.  Shiraleah has a wonderful selection of  eco-friendly dinnerware, in many styles and colors. The above picture on the left shows their alabaster recycled glass dinnerware. The swirling white glass would look fantastic with any simple dinner presentation.  The ruffled dessert plates on the right come in a great selection of rich colors, what better way to make your painstakingly created (or cleverly purchased) dessert appear more opulent.  I may have to get some of these.

recycled pressed glass bowls

I picked some simple opaque pressed glass bowls, and a beautiful salad serving set, in a Ginko Leaf pattern.  The items arrived quickly and in perfect condition.  I love the slight aquatint to the bowls contrasting with the  crisp white exterior.  They have a modern feel,  yet the pressed glass is reminiscent of depression era dinnerware. The Ginko Salad Servers have a nice weight to them.  I enjoy their novel yet elegant design.

shiraleah tableware

Although I focused on dinnerware for this review, Shiraleah has far more to offer.   They also have many other great houseware options, as well as, fashion accessories.

The link to the direct link to Shiraleah has been removed from this post. There was some miscommunication concerning how to purchase their products.  They are a manufacturer and items can not be purchased directly off their website.   Apparently, their wares appealed to a good number of my readers, and they have been getting a lot of inquiries, which the company has been unable to accomodate, since they only sell via wholesaleShiraleah items can be purchases in boutiques, or online at http://www.shopinspiredliving.com/.

Zuvo Water Purator: Review & Giveaway

zuvo logo

I was sent a  Zuvo Purator water filtration system with UV germ killing technology a few weeks ago to review.   The Purator uses a unique 3 prong approach to thoroughly purify your water.  Not only is the water filtered, it is also ozonated and treated with UV light to kill germs.

Zuvo Water Purator review

The 5-step filtration process mirrors the the ways nature purifies water.

  1. Ozonation ~Just as lightening cleanses the water in the air surrounding it, the Zuvo Water Purator mixes ozone with incoming tap water.  This results in better taste and contaminant reduction.
  2. Ultraviolet Light ~The water is next flooded with high-intensity UV light.  This mimics how solar energy cleans the water in the upper atmosphere.
  3. Photo-oxidation ~ The UV and ozone are combined in a patented process which releases powerful oxidizers to further treat the water.
  4. Filtration with Lead Removal ~ The water is then filtered through Class 1 Particulate Reduction Filter.  This removes chlorine, lead, and particulate matter, in much the same way spring water is filtered through the earth.
  5. Post-Filtration UV ~ Just to be safe, the water is once again treated with germ killing UV light.

Not only does the Zuvo Water Purator provide amazingly clean water, but the filters last an estimated 6 months, and the UV bulb up to 3 years.  I hate the hassle and cost of filter changes, so this really appeals to me.

The filtering process is neat to watch.  The water bubbles and churns around the glowing UV bulb, after you shut off the tap, the Zuvo Purator shuts itself off and the filtration tube takes on the look of brushed stainless.  This may just get your kids excited to drink water.

Zuvo uv on-off

Setting up the Zuvo system above the counter only took at couple minutes.  It is pretty much ready to go, as is.  Simply plug the unit into a GFC electrical plug, and screw the nozzle onto the faucet.  The unit must then be run for 5 minutes prior to drawing any drinking water.  Under counter system set-up has more to it, and a faucet butler is required.  This is not an option for us anyway, since  the faucet holes on our vintage sink, come out of the back splash.

zuvo faucet hookup

This water filter system will will not only save the expense of bottled water, but will keep numerous water bottles from having to be recycled.  The Purator is replacing regular faucet mount filters in our house, so our savings calulations are not as great as those who purchase bottled water.  It is estimated that the average bottle purchasing household could save approximately $2000 in a 2 year span, by switching to a Zuvo purifier, not to mention all the wasted plastic bottles that would be avoided.

Disclosure: While I received a purator for the purpose of this review, all opinions presented here are my own, and no monetary compensation was given.

How to Clean a Burnt Pan

Cleaning a burnt pan is not exactly the peak of excitement, but it is a fact of life.  I was actually surprised, to find out that some people don’t know this easy trick.

Since my husband graciously forgot he had a burger cooking a couple days ago, and charred the heck out of one of my Calphalon pans, I decided to make use of the opportunity to show the effectiveness of this simple technique.  It has worked on pans far worse than this, pans I thought were lost forever

Here is the charred pan.  It has already had the loose stuff scrubbed off.

burnt pan

Put a couple table spoons of baking soda in the pan.  Fill about a 1/4 to a 1/2 an inch deep with water, and put on stove burner on med-high heat.  Some particles may start coming to the surface as water begins to boil.  Take a wooden spoon or spatula and gently scrape at the burnt crust.  Most will come up pretty easy, and any reminents should scrub off much easier now.

simmering with baking soda

Back to it’s old self.

One of the best things about this method, is how gentle it is on your cookware.  It can even be done on non-stick pans.

ECOS Earth Friendly Products:Review

Over the last month, I have been trying out  several different eco-friendly cleaning products from ECOS, which I had been sent for review.  The products are labeled with an Earth Friendly Products logo.  This seems to be working name for the company.

ECOS has won several awards for their eco-friendly, cruelty-free products, which are plant-based and petroleum-free.  The products are formulated to be non-toxic, biodegradable, phosphate-free and neutral in pH.

Now to get to the core of the matter.  We know they are “green” and “cruelty-free”, do they work?  As you will see below, the products I tried were rather effective, and more pleasant to use than traditional chemical laden cleaning products.  Here is the product-by-product scoop.

Baby Laundry Soap ~ Although our daughter wouldn’t be considered a baby anymore,  this the detergent we were sent to try, so we gave it a shot.  The detergent has a pleasant chamomile & lavender scent, which is not overpowering and since it comes from real essential oils, is very natural smelling.  Since it needs to be baby safe, it is also hypo-allergenic and formulated to rinse thoroughly.  The detergent worked well on our regular laundry, even my husbands work shirts, and the one my daughter got pizza sauce on.  It is reasonably priced at $6.99/50 oz. bottle,  about the same as a name brand regular detergent.

Window Cleaner (Kleener) ~ We were sent the regular version of their window cleaner, the label on mine said Kleener, rather than Cleaner.  It’s powered by vinegar and coconut based soap, and is quite effective.  It had a very light vinegar scent, that quickly dissipated.  This eco-friendly window cleaner cleaned well and I found it to be non-streaking. It retails for $3.89, for a 22 oz. spray bottle.

DuoDish ~ For the first time ever, this dish soap is formulated to work both in the dishwasher and for hand washing dishes and cookware.  I personally had a hard time getting over the lack of suds, while hand washing dishes.  Of course, a non-sudsing formula is necessary for it to be used in the dishwasher, and while the sudsless cleaning didn’t feel right for me, it did seem to work.  The product worked just as well as, most regular brands in the dishwasher, and rinsed clean, without spots.  I don’t have a price for this one, as it is just coming out.  I am sure it is competitively priced like the other products in the line, though.

Fruit & Veggie Wash ~ A tasteless odorless wash for your fruits and vegetables.  Formulated to help was off  pesticides and other contaminates off your produce, as well as dirt and wax.  I can vouch that it left no taste or odor behind, but while it did clean off the fruits I used it on, I have no way of actually knowing if residue remained.  I’m sure it helped though. 22 oz. bottle retails for $4.99.

Ecos Earth friendly Products can be ordered directly from their website, or at various retailers in your area.

Snack Taxi Reusable Sandwich Bags: Review

reusable fabric snack bags

I recently got to try out some of Snack Taxi’s line of eco-friendly reusable food storage bags, for review.  I received a sandwich bag, snack bag, napkin and produce bag.  The reusable sandwich & snack bags only differed in size.  They are cotton fabric on the outside and are lined with nylon, which is coated with polyurethane, on the side which does not touch the food.  The pouches are fastened with velcro closures. The napkin is a double sided with complimentary patterns, so it can mix and  match with the other items in the product line readily.  The produce bag is a large nylon fabric sack, which can handle a pretty hefty amout of fruits or veggies. Just the thing to bring along to the farmers market to protect your more delicate purchases.

As you can see in the pictures, SnackTaxi products come in a wide array of fabric patterns, but what you see here is just the tip of the iceberg.  They offer everything from kitschy, to feminine, to classic,  to “guy” themes.  There is a pattern for everyone.

reusable food storage bags

When the time comes to wash your Snack Taxi bags, no worries.  They can be hand washed and left out to air dry, for maximum lifespan, or in the washer & dryer for convenience.  If your Snack Taxi sacks get especially gooped up, it is suggested you fill them with hot water and let them soak for a little while before washing.  In my opinion, they seem quite durable and should last a significant amount of time, whichever cleaning method you select.

These will work great for my daughter’s lunch, when she starts preschool, in a couple months.  Using these 4 days a week will certainly cut back on our plastic bag waste.
