Toddler Tote Toy Review

toddler tote review

My daughter and I recently had the opportunity to review the Lauri Toddler Tote.  The tote is designed to keep toddlers occupied while you are away from home.  It contains a variety of activities, many of which could be used in multiple ways.  The activities are geared toward building skills related to coordination, concentration and learning shapes and colors.  You could easily use it in sorting and counting games, as well.

My daughter is 3 1/2, but has delays due to autism.  I found the Toddler Tote activities to be a good match for her, since she is capable of doing most of the tasks, so I can ask for and expect her to do the majority of the activities.  While the tote is listed as fitting for children age 2-5, I would say for typically developing children it would be most appropriate for the 2-3 year olds.

While I was on the Growing Tree Toys website, I also noticed that they carry the Rody Pony.  This is also a great toy choice for children with autism, or sensory needs.  My daughter has had hers for about 1 1/2 years and still plays with it occasionally.  The site had a great selection of stacking and sorting toys too.

Toys for Autism | Punch Ball Piggy

punch ball piggy sensory toy

I’ve found that my autistic daughter often doesn’t go for the expensive toys with all the bells and whistles.  Like many kids with autism, she has strong sensory needs, and the toys that really appeal to her are those that fill that need.

My most recent find was a somewhat disturbing looking animal punch ball.  Their were other animals available, but I grabbed the pig, along with bubbles and a nubby ball.  The toys were only $1.99 each, and buy 2 get 1 free (Walgreens).

I had a feeling she would really go for the silly pig, since it was squishy and the material had a weird feel to it.  I was right.  It has been a preferred toy for the past 5 days.  I have inflated it into a ball, then just as a squishy toy.  She likes it both ways, and it is easy to change the inflation of it.  I find it a little less disturbing to look at less inflated, so that is how it currently is.

Smarcks: Talking Building Blocks Review

Smarcks talking building blocks review

My daughter and I recently had the fun opportunity to review a set of talking building blocks.  These educational interactive building blocks are called Smarcks, and they can do so much more than typical blocks.  As your child stacks the blocks, they are taught:

  • Colors
  • Counting
  • smarcks talking building blocks storage containerSpelling
  • Shapes
  • Nursery Rhymes
  • Music
  • Math
  • Good Manners

Check out this video to become more aquainted with these great educational blocks from Smarks:

Smarcks  come as typical building blocks, as wells as, talking blocks.  It is easy for kids to tell which blocks will talk to them, they are the ones with faces.  The sound from the talking building blocks is strong and clear, but not so loud as to drive parents crazy. Smarcks counting and math blocks are especially innovative, indicating the peg count of the blocks they are put on and encouraging your child to musical learning block smarckscount along with the Smarck.

The only block that got on my nerves a bit was the musical one we received, of course that was one of my daughter’s favorites.  I guess it would be my favorite if I was 3 1/2 too.  The cool thing about this though, is that the music blocks are the only ones that are clear plastic, so if mom isn’t up for it, they can be put aside for awhile.

The blocks have a little heavier construction than most brands.  These are high quality building blocks, and they are competitively priced.  I also liked the sturdy container they came in.  Kids can sit on it, without worry.  If you already have a bunch of similar shaped large blocks, they may be somewhat usable with your Smarcks building blocks.  They will not work properly with the more interactive blocks like the counting ones, but my daughters old blocks fit with Smarks well enough, that they could be used together for a larger building project.  If your kids don’t already have a large collection of building blocks, I would suggest sticking with buying all Smarcks, so that there will be no confusion, as to which blocks will work right with which.

As you can see in the picture above, my daughter went right for these blocks (The book in the background was abruptly dropped when she saw the Smarks).

Starting Phases of ABA Therapy Autism Treatment

a warm winter day

My daughter “M” has a diagnosis of autism, while she is a generally happy child, and can be quite charming communication is very challenging for her.

After a 6 month wait to start the process of ABA, we were assigned a provider a few weeks ago.  I’ve been meeting with a Clinical Supervisor weekly, so that the program can be tailored to the needs of M.  At first I was a bit taken aback at the mention that it could take up to 6 months to actually get a regular worker into our house, but the process seems to be moving along much faster than that.  We’ve set up a tentative schedule of 20 hours a week, and should be starting sometime in March.

It will seem a bit weird to have someone in my home that long each week, but I am eager to see the effect this will have on M.

To help them understand my daughter, so  they can work with her more effectively, I have been charting “behavior problem” events, and charting every sound M makes during 10-15 minute segments of time.  Of course, since I started doing the charting she has only had a couple bratty episodes, both related to wanting another Nestle Delicias mango ice cream bar, after she was shut off.  She is a fiend for them.

She Said “Yeah” | The Chocolate Breakthrough

speaking for chocolate

As anyone with a child on the autism spectrum knows,  things which are seen as a nothing occurrences for typically developing kids, can be a heck of a big deal for our children.  My little girl has a very limited vocabulary so far, and generally gets by with charm & the occasional gesture or utterance.

When I picked her up from preschool today the teacher assistant was all happy because M had answered her.  She had said “yeah” enthusiastically when asked if she wanted an M & M.  My daughter LOVES chocolate, and of course doesn’t get it all the time.  This was a breakthrough for her at school.  She does answer me at home, but this was the first time she had verbally answered a question posed to her by this teacher.

Amazing what a little chocolate can do.

Lazoo Childrens Products: Review and Giveaway

lazoo logo

Lazoo is a children’s lifestyle brand with a focus on fun.  Lazoo is inspired by a popular series of Japanese children’s books.  The colorful and unique art style featured in the books has mow spread to a whinsical line of clothing and accessories, as well as, some absolutely adorable plush toys.  Aren’t these just the cutest?lazoo plush toys

The clothing line is just as cute.  The pieces feature colorful fun graphics, which will appeal to both children and their parents.  We were sent the pink and red santa shirt in the bottom row, and I must say it is not only a great looking holiday tee, but is well made as well.  I will be taking my daughter’s holiday picture in it, in the next couple of days, and I will be sure to share it on the blog.lazoo shirts

The line has much more than tee shirts too.  I have my eye on the ballerina corduroy set I saw on their website.  I must say for such stylish kid’s clothes, their prices are quite reasonable.

My 3 year old’s favorite Lazoo products though are the books.  She took to them immediately, and her favorite so far has been the book of colors.

lazoo book review

We were also sent Holes! , a neat book, that encourages children to color in the holes in the pages to see the surprise result on the next page.  It is one of the more innovative kids books I’ve ever seen.  Finally we received Squiggles! , this book is meant to showcase kids scribbles in a fun way.

If you have never experienced Lazoo products before, I encourage you to stop by and check out the site.  I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

VdoBug Remote and Interactive Stories: Review and Giveaway

vdobug logo

Warning: Vdobug seems to be out of business, but their order forms are still active on the website.

This giveaway was never fulfilled by company.

I have repeatedly tried contacting this company.  No response to the email contacts I have, and the email listed on the website bounces.  The toll-free phone number listed is now held by an unaffiliated company & there has been no activity on their social media accounts since November 2010.

What is a VdoBug?

VdoBug publishes bilingual picture books which can be interacted with through CDs or  DVDs using the VdoBug remote.  Since the VdoBug software can be used with a typical household DVD player, it is a financially friendly option for families, to present a digital learning format to their children.  The VdoBug remote allows kids the the navigate the the material on the DVDs, much like they were on a computer, but on a big screen, with a kid friendly design.  While a DVD player would be the typical device used by most families, VdoBug products can also be used with PCs and Smartboards, as well.

The products are targeted for kids in the 2-7 year old age range. I would also like to mention, that The VdoBug earned the 2010 Creative Child Magazine Product of the Year and is a Dr. Toy Best Products.

vdobug remote and DVD

What stories and materials are available for the VdoBug?

  • Spring~ Cinnamon & The April Shower
  • Summer ~ Mason Moves Away

These interactive DVDs include puzzles, printable coloring pages, videos of the characters in their natural habitat & the music of Grammy nominees Red Grammer & Maria Del Rey. VdoBug also offers CDs and DVDs that cover the topics: learning to tell time, baby Pre-school, dogs, dinosaurs and more to come.

Is the VdoBug hard to set up?

No, it is pretty straight forward.  Check out this video.  It shows all the steps.

Winter Sports Tips from Gatorade + Gift Pack Giveaway

Helping Student Athletes Perform Their Best

With the school sports season underway, the nation’s 30 million middle and high school athletes face challenges like never before. Competition for roster spots, playing time and athletic scholarships is at an all-time high. Mothers of these athletes are equally challenged with ensuring their kids perform their best in school and on the playing field. To help, sports parenting expert Brooke de Lench – a mom, former athlete, youth coach, author and founder of the sports parenting resource MomsTeam.com – recommends the following game plan:

Blow the Whistle at Bedtime. Studies show that students need nine hours of sleep but only get about seven. Set a consistent “lights out” time for turning off the computer, cell phone and television so young athletes get the rest they need. Consider docking texting and gaming devices away from their bedroom to reduce late-night distractions.

Fuel the Burn. Active young athletes need at least 3,000 calories per day for peak performance, so they need to eat very frequently. Help them maintain energy throughout the day by sending them off with healthy, high-carb, low-fat snacks such as energy bars, trail mix or dried fruit to munch at their desks (if it’s ok with the teacher). Students with early morning workouts should eat two breakfasts – one before the workout and one before school.  So, send athletes to practice with a snack to help them recover and refuel.

Be Proactive About Hydration.  Staying hydrated during the school day is challenging. In fact, studies show that many student athletes start their sports already dehydrated, making it difficult for them to catch up during activity.  For safety and performance reasons athletes need to be hydrated no matter what the season, and water isn’t enough because it doesn’t hydrate as effectively as a sports drink like Gatorade that is scientifically formulated with fluid, electrolytes and carbohydrates to rapidly replace what athletes lose through sweat and provide energy to keep them at the top of their game.

Use Sports Sense to Power Schoolwork. Great athletes are disciplined, focused and dedicated. Help young athletes channel these qualities to manage their schoolwork as well. Encourage them to use free time at school to review notes or knock off smaller assignments. Also, coach them to tackle the tough stuff first. Young athletes will be tired after sports, so they should finish priority and difficult homework earlier in the day.

Don’t Forget the Fun. Youth sports may be increasingly competitive, but the top reason kids play sports is to enjoy the game. Look out for warning signs that students are struggling to enjoy the experience, and work with them to find a solution. Warning signs include: complaints of sickness at practice or game time; slow return to practice after injury; nervousness, anxiety or anger before, during or after the game; practices well but plays poorly.

Autism Isn’t Quite what I Expected

Today on the Special Needs Blog Hop, the question was “What do you love most about your child?”

The answer may surprise anyone not familiar with the reality of autism.  It is a wide spectrum, and the classic view of a withdrawn child with little interest in others is not descriptive of many children with autism.  My daughter is a happy little girl, who quietly charms the pants off everyone she meets.  She is a craver of hugs, and attention.

My favorite thing about her is her bigs smiles and infectious laugh.  She can make even the worst day seem terrific.
