Melissa and Doug Band in a Box Giveaway: Sensory Street Kids

NOTE: This site seems to have closed down.

The explosion in the number of children diagnosed with autism, has been rather well publicized.  Yet, along with a rise in the number of children diagnosed with autism, Sensory Processing/Integration Disorder has also seen a significant rise in diagnosis.  Which ever label a child receive, both respond well to similar therapies.  My own daughter was diagnosed with SID (sensory integration disorder) around the age of 2, later to receive a diagnosis on the autism spectrum.

Sensory Street Kids is an interactive music and movement classes specifically tailored, for young children with sensory processing issues and/or speech delays.  There are three different classes available:

La La Language: Learning how to talk is easy when you’re singing and dancing! We’ve taken a developmental approach to language acquisition and set it to music. We use songs and signing to promote sound formation, imitation, single word labels and 2 word combinations.

Social Circle: Music, movement and partner games are incorporated in this fun class. Simple cooperative play is facilitated and activities focus on social use of language, turn taking and conversation.

Me & My Energy: Shake your sillies out and work your large muscle groups in this movement class. Sensory based activities, dances and obstacle courses help calm and regulate senses. Focus is on cooperation, motor planning, following directions and using and understanding action words.

Classes such as these can be an invaluable tool, for helping children get past the barriers of autism and sensory processing disorder.  They are also a fun way for kids who simply have a speech delay, to work on their language skills.   I have seen the effectiveness of music and movement group activities, first hand with my own child, through a playgroup in my area.

Sensory Street Kids is located in Bohemia, NY, but if you are not from that area they still have something for you.  The La La Language blog, as well as, their Facebook and Twitter accounts share useful information for parents of children with sensory difficulties.
