Childhood is a time of play, investigation, learning and creativity. My little girl is autistic, so we tend to go out of our way providing her opportunities in all these areas. It saddens me that children in some parts of the world do not have the opportunity to enjoy a childhood, children my daughter’s age, or even younger.
Tragically, many elementary school age children have to work long days for their family’s survival. This is especially true in India. where children like ten year old Tejas was working in the cotton fields with his parents until the IKEA Foundation Child Labor initiative along with Save the Children provided help. Tejas now attends school regularly and aspires to become a police officer.

IKEA Foundation Partners have helped 10,000 migrant working children return to their home communities, and most importantly their families. School enrollment in participating communities has improved greatly. Almost 2,000 teachers have been trained, as well as about as many Anganwadi (health, education) workers. There is also a particular emphasis on improving the situation of girls through the program. The effect the IKEA Foundation Child Labor initiative has had in the regions it is active in has been astounding, and the foundation has recently made a large donation to expand the program into even more regions. The programs it helps fund are currently benefiting and estimated 100 million children.

”We know there is no quick-fix solution to ending child labor, but long–term approaches can yield impressive results. The IKEA Foundation, with our partners, has been tackling this issue in India for nearly a decade. This new phase reinforces our long-term commitment and our desire to help millions more children out of child labor and back into the classrooms.” ~ IKEA Foundation’s CEO, Per Heggenes
