Yo Gabba Gabba LIVE! was A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

Yo Gabba Gabba Live

My daughter and I just got back from the Yo Gabba Gabba Live! show in Providence about 2 hours ago.  She passed out in the SUV on the way home.  I think all the excitement was too much for her.

I had been repeatedly telling my daughter that we were going to visit D.J. Lance, Brobee, Foofa & the rest of the gang.  It seemed to be sinking in with her over the weekend.  I told her several times that she needed to stay in her bed and sleep good last night, so that she wouldn’t be too tired to see the show.  Last night was the first time in months she slept through the night without trying to invade my bed.  She apparently heeded my warnings.

Foofa & Muno on stage

My little girl has autism, so she can’t express her joy effectively in words, but she certainly expressed it in other ways during the Yo Gabba Gabba show. When the characters came out onto the stage I could see the look of sheer joy and amazement on my daughters face.  She lit up with a massive grin, and waived her hands around in excited delight. She barely sat down for the whole show.  She danced with the songs, and cheered with the characters.

Two high points in the show for her were when Brobee floated up off the stage with some balloons, and when the characters walked through the aisles.  She tried to run after Brobee.  If you have a 2-6 year old, and Yo Gabba Gabba LIVE!  is coming to your town.  I highly recommend going, your children will have a ball.

Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC)

The show was a the Providence Performing Arts Center (PPAC), we had some very nice seats, about 10 rows back center.  My daughter was kept occupied while we waited for the show to start, by gazing around at the amazing architecture.  It is a truly beautiful theater.  I’ve seen quite a few concerts there, and sat in various spots. While some seats are better than others, since it is a smaller venue, all are decent.

Mr. Potato Head has been KIDNAPPED!

Mr. Potato Head - Mr. Potato Head Kidnapped!I realized today that a toy I was supposed to review, had not yet arrived.  The toy.. a Mr. Potato Head.  I contacted the nice lady who I had spoken to about the review, and she not only assured me that  the anthropomorphic spud had indeed been sent, but even sent me a copy of the delivery record.  I checked my calendar, and we had work done on our house that day.  Now I am not prone to pointing fingers, but Mr. Potato Head did not walk away by himself.  He was kidnapped.

For most of you a the loss of a $10 “spud bud” would not be of any special note, but I am a Rhode Islander.  To be more specific, I live in Pawtucket, the birthplace of Mr. Potato Head.  Around here, Mr. Potato Head is an icon.  We take him seriously.

Heck, in 2000 we had a statewide installation of 6 ft. tall Mr. Potato Head statues.  Three of them are still on public display.  The original one is in front of Hasbro headquarters, Pawtucket.  Another is  in the Hasbro sponsored playground in Roger Williams Park, and a poor bedraggled “pizza” Mr. Potato Head abides at Caserta Pizza, in Providence.

Life moves on, and a replacement Mr. Potato Head is on his way.  We can only hope the missing spud has found his way to the care of a child.

Update: The replacement  Toy Story 3 classic  Mr. Potato Head arrived safe and sound :)

Mystic Aquarium: Family Fun in Eastern Connecticut

My husband, daughter and I, all had the pleasure of visiting Mystic Aquarium, in Mystic, Connecticut, recently.  My daughter is three and has autism.   Her speech is very limited, but she is quite good at indicating things she enjoys, and she LOVED the aquarium.  My husband and I both enjoyed the experience, as well.

beluga whale at Mystic Aquarium

From the minute you go through the Aquarium entrance, it is obvious there is much going on.  Mystic is both an indoor and outdoor aquarium, with over 70 exhibits.  The outdoor areas feature sea mammals, penguins, and a marshland exhibit.  Particularly impressive is the Beluga whale exhibit, which is to a visitor’s right, as they enter.  The exhibit houses 3 beluga whales, who can be viewed face-to-cafe, as shown in this picture, or from the top like you would see them in the wild.

penguin bubblesA harbor seal and several Stellar sea lions are housed in the Priblof Islands exhibit.  Not only are they available for viewing in a habitat environment outside, but several of them also perform in the aquarium’s Marine Theater live indoor shows. They have  a couple male sea lions which are quite huge, and are excellent performers, as well.

Another popular exhibit features a colony of 29 African penguins.  There you can view the penguins walking around and swimming right at your eye level.  Proceed down a ramp, and you will come to two viewing bubbles indenting into the tank enclosure.  Here you can get the feeling of being in the tank, by poking your head in.  Then, walk through the small gift shop and before the exit, you’ll get the view shown in this picture.  As you can see, the penguins are watching the people, as they look through the bubble windows.

A short boardwalk through the marshland exhibit will bring you to the Birds of the Outback Aviary.  Where for a $3 entry fee, you can go in the giant aviary filled with colorful birds, which you are welcome to feed millet to.  Also outside of the main exhibit floor but near the other entrance, is the ray touch pool.  This large shallow pool, gives guests a hands on experience with small rays.  When you place your hand flat in the pool, the rays will swim across it to get “pet”.  My daughter was thrilled with a particular ray. It really seemed to be seeking her attention, that of course triggered a rash of giggles from her.

Inside the main building of the aquarium, there are several new features.  Throughout the indoor exhibit space you will find Sense-Sational Seas kioks.  At these kioks, you will be able to use your senses to experience things the  way marine creatures do.  There is also, a Shark Encounters pool, where like the ray tank, visitor’s can touch sea life, in this case, docile white-spotted bamboo sharks.

jelly fish exhibit

One of the new exhibits, Jellies: The Ocean in Motion, is a visually exciting presentation which utilizes special lighting showcases to exhibit various jelly fish.  The Jellies exhibit seemed to be very popular with visitors.  It was pretty packed in there, but my little girl was drawn to the tank shown above, and squirmed herself right in.  The whole exhibit was full of fascinated little faces peering at jelly fish.

Keep in mind Mystic Aquarium is also on the cutting edge of exploration.  This is reflected by the recently opened the Nautilus Live Theater.  The theater hosts daily shows presented my an onshore team member of Nautilus, Dr. Robert Ballard’s  deep sea expedition.  The expedition is exploring the sea bed, of the Black Sea, Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean.

sharks and rays at Mystic AquariumEstablished exhibits that I remembered from past visits, were still great to see.  The huge Coral Reef tank, Stingray Bay and Shark Lagoon are must see exhibits.  Kids will love the Discovery Lab, a touch and learn exhibit of local marine life.

Mystic Aquarium is an extensive experience, and I have only touched upon a portion of the great things this aquarium has to offer.  I strongly suggest, browsing their website, before your visit, and speaking to someone at the information booth when you arrive, so you don’t miss anything.  If you have school age children, expect to spend a good deal of time exploring the indoor and outdoor exhibits and shows. Even with young children, like mine, a visit here will occupy a couple fun filled hours.

Info:

  • Mystic Aquarium is open year round.
  • Hours: March-Oct. (9-6)/Nov. (9-5)/Dec.-Feb. (10-5)
  • Admission: Adults $28, Seniors $25, Kids (3-17) $20 , age 2 and under & aquarium members free.

If you buy your tickets online, there is currently a promotion, where you get lunch (a slice of cheese pizza and a soda) for just a dollar.  This deal is only available online.

Dreamnight at the Zoo

Last Friday night, my daughter and I attended “Dreamnight at the Zoo”, at Roger Williams Park Zoo, Providence, RI.  During the event, volunteers and staff go out of their way to create a fun evening, for children with disabilites.

My daughter had not been to the zoo in almost a year.  The last time she went, she barely paid attention to any of the animals, except the seals.  This time it was much different.  She was excited to see the animals.  The seals were still her favorite, but she really enjoyed the radiated tortoise, camels, penguins and elephants too.

The bubble shows going on through out much of the zoo that evening overjoyed my little girl.  Several staff members were making gigantic bubbles along one of the pathways.   My daughter went bananas for these massive bubbles, which were many times larger than she is.

There were buffet lines set up, for the families to enjoy and soda, water and juiceboxes to drink.  Gift shop purchases were about the only thing, that attendees could spend money on, and they even had a 10% discount on everything for the evening.

The Dreamnight at the Zoo events started at the Rotterdam Zoo, Netherlands, in 1996.  Now over 170 Zoos across the globe particpate.  Bringing a special night of joy to children who have the added struggle in life, of dealing with disabilities.

Hand Bound Books & Albums from Rag and Bone Bindery

Rag and Bone Bindery produces hand bound archival quality books and albums.  These handcrafted books are perfect for safekeeping your special memories. Their product line includes: photo albums (see review below), journals, guest books, baby books, binders and more.  Rag and Bone books and albums are available in a wide selection of attractive cover fabrics.

hand bound books fabric choices

The bindery is located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island and their books and albums are handcrafted right in the studio, by professional bookbinders.  Rag and Bone also sources, many of their materials locally.  This local sourcing is not only an environmentally sound choice, but is  economically beneficial to this struggling community.  Another way that Rag and Bone has reduced the environmental impact of their production is the use of recycled content.  30% post consumer content paper is used for pages and paper products, and the book board used to create the covers is 100% recycled content (75% post consumer).

It is also nice to know that, Rag and Bone has done special orders for Oprah, Barnes & Noble, Sundance and many more.

Books, albums and papergoods can be purchased directly through the Rag and Bone website, or through various boutiques.

Hand Bound Photo Frame Album: Review

Hand Bound photo album pages

I was given one of Rag and Bone’s Photo Frame Albums for review.  The album features slip in heavy stock pages, made of archival paper.  It holds twenty standard size (4″x6″) photographs. There are currently 37 different fabric options available for the covers.  The pattern featured in this review is called “Poppies”.

handcrafted photo album

The bindery has been in business since 1991, and the experience certainly shows in the quality of their products.  The cover was well constructed with tight seams.  Unlike mass produced books, the care taken in production is quite visible.

hand made album binding

I found it very easy to slide my photographs into the frame pages.  The photos stayed snuggly in place without any slippage, but removing them, to rearrange was no trouble at all.  These are important things to keep in mind, when selecting an album, especially if you are dealing with older cherished pictures.  No one wants to damage special photographs putting them into an album for safe keeping.

handcrafted baby photo album

The photos I put in my album are some of my favorite shots of my daughter.  Most are about two years old now, and finally have a home.  I am happy to know they are now safely stored in archival sleeves, and the presentation could not be better.

I will be keeping these photo frame albums in mind, when buying shower gifts in the future.  They are perfect for both bridal or baby showers.  The albums would also be an excellent choice for professional photographers, to showcase or package their work.

The Rhode Island Spring Flower & Garden Show

I went to The Rhode Island Spring Flower & Garden Show this afternoon with my husband and our young daughter.  Regretfully, I forgot my camera at home.  I would have had a very hard time getting any larger scenes anyway, as the show was absolutely mobbed.  The unusually warm weather, must have brought out the crowds.

The shows theme this year was “Timeless Gardens”, and featured gardens as flashbacks to prior decades.  The 60′s seemed particularly popular in the vignettes, and my husband actually thought the whole show was a 60′s theme, until I told him that it covered various decades ( I would have thought the same thing he did at that point , if I hadn’t read about the show earlier).  Some of the vignettes this year seemed to concentrate a bit too much on the theme, rather than presenting a quality garden presentation, but most were quite nice.

The giant sand sculpture commemorating the 60′s was impressive and the patio garden across from it was well executed.  There was also a display representing a dilapidated church yard, with a brook running through it that my husband liked, and pond vignette that was rather pretty.

The vendors area was as large, if not larger than the display area.  About half the vendors were selling products which were not remotely related to flowers, gardening or landscaping.  There were some wonderful garden sculptures and other crafted garden items, and a few vendors actually selling plants.  I was pleased to see these vendors did not seem to jack up their prices for the show.  My husband was disappointed that no one was there to present any decking options.   I was a hoping to see some more exotic plants for sale, but my daughter was thrilled to see the Pillow Pets display.

While it was a nice day out, I don’t see us attending next year.
