Master Bedroom Renovation: Ending the Power Tool Phase

The seemingly never ending saga of my bedroom renovation is finally about to move on to the interior decorating phase!  I am proud of  all I have managed to do by myself.  I laid the walnut laminate flooring last week.

cutting laminate flooring

My jig saw worked perfectly for cutting the flooring.

laying lamimate flooring

The Victorian architecture called for some weird cutting angles, but all went smoothly.

The baseboard heat covers went back in this weekend, and I touched up the paint.

taking a break from renovations

Reinstalling the baseboard heat was a royal pain, so I took a break with a nice glass of wine.

Ready for curtains and furniture... still waiting on ceiling fan issue to be resolved.

I’ve picked up some inexpensive curtain rods, so the drapes will be hung this week.  I am also picking up a new mattress set tomorrow. Dresser & night stand  makeovers and upholstered headboard project soon to come… I have already  set up a work area in the basement for these projects.

Oh, and I am already contemplating the next room to renovate…lol

Get the Vintage Halloween Look in Your Home with these Great Finds from Pottery Barn Kids

I recently received a couple lovely vintage look Halloween decorations from Pottery Barn Kids.   I must say they blend in wonderfully with the vintage items I already owned. I actually prefer having these vintage-look holiday decorations, over the genuine thing for display in my home. I have a curious 4 year old, and I don’t have to ban her from touching these. They are not delicate, and I know the paint used on them is not hazardous.
replica vintage halloween luminariesOne of the pieces I received was the antique style Halloween Cat Luminary ($17.99) above.  It was larger than I expected, around the size of an adult head.  The luminary was well constructed, and has an authentic look.  While it is intended to hold a light, it is also perfect for a dried flower or gnarly branch arrangement.  I adore it.

halloween countdown calendarThe Halloween Countdown Calendar ($44.99 )is fun for the kids, while still working with a vintage look.  The graphics are wonderfully crafted from felt.  Since, hanging it I have gotten many compliments on it already.  This wall hanging is sure to become a family heirloom.

Below are a couple pics of some other items that I really liked off the website.

vintage look halloween treat bucketsThese little treat buckets come in a pack of three.  They are too cute.  I may just have to order some of these. Just $11.99 now!

skeleton candlesThese Halloween silhouette candles, would go with most any decor, including the vintage look that appeals to me so much.

There is still time to order some great vintage look Halloween decor from Pottery Barn Kids.  Since there are only a couple weeks left until the holiday, all the wonderful items above, as well as, the rest of the kids Halloween decor and costumes, are on sale now.  Hurry, items are selling out quickly at the discounted prices.

Glittery Decorative Halloween Shelf Craft Project #GlueNGlitter #cbias

Halloween Decorative Shelf CraftI had been looking for a decorative Halloween shelf, but couldn’t find one, so I started thinking about the prospect of making one myself.  When the opportunity came up to make a Halloween craft project using Elmer’s Foam Board and Glue Spots, it seemed the perfect chance to tackle this project (and give myself the motivation to bring the thought to fruition).craft project materials from Walmart

Foam board is sturdy, yet light, so it seemed a good choice for a seasonal decorative shelf.  Walmart had Elmer’s Tri-Fold foam boards available in black… perfect for this shelf project.  You could actually make 4 shelves out of one tr-fold board.  I already had some Elmer’s Glue Spots on-hand, but needed narrow black ribbon, black glitter and a new bottle of Elmer’s Glue All.

When I returned home, I got right down to business:  First I cut a “shelf” roughly 8 inches wide from the tri-fold foam board.

cutting foam board

Cutting shelf from tri-fold board, using a cutting board as a guide.

Then I cut off the side flaps, and cut crescent moon shapes out of them, making sure to leave a flat edge at the top and back to support the shelf.

moon pattern

Here is the pattern I drew out & cut from foam board with X-Acto knife (click-thru this image twice to get actual size pattern)

The moons were then painted with a mixture of 2/3 Elmer’s Glue-All & 1/3 water.  They were then generously coated with black glitter.

Mixture of 2 parts Elmer's Glue-All / 1 part water was painted on moon shapes amd coated with black glitter.

While they dried, I used Glue Spots to attach the black ribbon over the edge of the shelf, for a more “finished” appearance.

ribbon for shelf edge

Glueing ribbon the edge of shelf gives it a more "finished" appearance. Scrapbooking paper cut with decorative edge scissors would be a nice substitution here.

Once the moons had dried, I lined them up on the shelf back with another flat surface standing in for a wall.  I then marked the front and back of where the moons, lay against the shelf.  I then cut out the bottom layer of the foam board between these marks, making a narrow slot for the moons to nest in.  A little Glue-All was put in the slots, as well as, the flat edge of the moons. They were then inserted, and braced to dry.

After the shelf was fully dry.  I used Glue Spots to adhere it to the wall.  The shelf will be strong enough to hold paper/cardboard decorations, like shown, papiere mache items or other light decorations.

Because I Can’t Leave Well Enough Alone: Bedroom Renovation Progress

bedroom paint colorRemember that soft blue-gray-green color I had painted in the bedroom… It’s  gone.  Not only had it become scuffed up in a few spots, but the color was quite light.  The ornate tin ceiling, which is my favorite part of the room, just wasn’t “popping”.   I grabbed a gallon of blue-gray paint a shade or two darker, and repainted.  It does make the room appear a little smaller, but the ceiling and trim work definitely stand out more now.  I also think it compliments the walnut flooring better.

bedroom paletteNow I am just waiting for the floor leveler to dry, so I can get to work on laying the flooring.  I made it a little wetter, since I was pouring it by myself and didn’t want to risk it starting to set before I could get it down properly.

Staircase and Landing Makeover

Although I haven’t been covering my home renovations here over the past few weeks, they have been ongoing.  We had a hurricane related power outage here for about 4 days, that stalled me the projects I was already working on, so I stripped the wallpaper in my staircase and landing.  This of course, led to skim coating the walls, since my Victorian Era home has old horsehair plaster walls.  By the time we got power back, I was fully invested in this new project.  Two tubes of caulking, a bit of wood putty & many hours wrangling odd trim corners and a stubborn tin ceiling rewarded me with a staircase I no longer loathe.

painted stairs

No more chippy paint and yucky wallpaper.

painted staircase

I brushed rather than rolled eggshell paint, to accentuate the texture of the walls. Reminiscent of Venetian Plaster.

staircase colors

Colors are more accurate in this pic.

painted cast iron bracket and railing

Rather than tackling disassembly, I painted these in place. Went with wall color on the back plates since I really didn't want to bring attention to them.

painted tin ceiling

I have painted all the other tin ceilings I have done with flat enamel paint. This time I didn't have any on-hand and the ceiling for the landing was small so I used semi-gloss. I won't do that again, coverage was a nightmare.

I wish I had gotten some before pics. It was a sad site before…lol  I still plan to make a custom graphic for above the railing, using a roll of art paper I have, but that will need to wait until the bedroom project and minor bathroom makeover I started are complete.   I just can’t seem to keep myself to just one project at a time.  Fresh paint can be addicting :)

I Can’t Get Her Out of Her New Playroom!! #GliddenGallons #DIY

play kitchen and dance area

Apparently, Teddy belongs on the floor.

I just finished a playroom makeover using Glidden Brilliance paint from Walmart, and my daughter is absolutely in love with her new play space.  The playroom was painted green before and also had a green rug in a nearly identical shade of green.  The whole room let off a sort of funky green alien glow, and the rug was not good for a busy play area.

green room makeover

This green made everything & everyone look kind of like they had an alien glow.

I picked a pretty shade of  purple, called Lavender Phlox, from the virtual room color selector on the Glidden website.  I wanted something that wouldn’t clash with her pink play kitchen, that we use for a lot of toy and book storage, but really didn’t want to go with pink.  The Glidden Brilliance paint from Walmart went on like a dream.  Since the primer is already in it, all it took was one good coat with a few touch-ups here & there.  A single gallon covered this roughly 100 sq. ft room with plenty left for future touch-ups.

playroom makeover after

I still want to paint something for above this dresser.

I wish installing the flooring was 1/4 as easy as painting.  This was my first time installing laminate flooring, and as anyone who has lived in a Victorian Era home can tell you nothing is square…lol.  Once I got the hang of it, progress happened, and I am so happy to have a top to bottom easy to clean room now.  Both the walls and floor are now washable, for quick clean-ups.

easy to make curtains for girls room
Loved this ribbon from Walmart for just $1.97 for the roll!

These simple curtains were made with fabric I had in my stash with some pretty ribbon added.  The ribbon & topper fabric both came from Walmart.

reading and toy area

This 70's shelf got a modern update.

This is my daughter’s favorite spot.  She loves sitting on her toy box and looking at books here.  She also stands on it and fiddles with the items on the shelf.  The blue is called “Robin’s Egg”, I got it from an old Glidden color chip I had in my giant shoe box full of color chips.  I really should have gotten a before shot of the shelf.  My mother made it for me back in the 70′s & it is backed with that nasty paneling that was so popular back then.  Now it has been transformed into a fresh piece for my daughter :)

glitter paper letters

Glitter paper transformed into a sparkling description.

I had planned on hand painting some pictures on the walls, with the help of my craft projector, but a 4 day power outage & flooring taking a bit longer than I expected ate up a lot of my time.  I went to Walmart looking for another solution and spotted the glitter paper in the craft/scrap booking area.  I cut out the letters free hand and pasted them up with some watered down glue.  I like the sparkle they add.

The less cluttered and easier to clean room makes mommy very happy.  M loves the open dance space in the middle and areas to sit down and investigate her toys and books.  So it seems everyone is happy with this makeover.  I do think I will end out pulling out the projector and painting something for above the dresser.  If I do, I will be sure to share the results.

If you feel inspired to get to work on a makeover project of your own, I must say I was quite pleased with the Glidden Brilliance Paint, and will be using it in some future projects.  You may wish to give it a try yourself.

Bedroom Renovation Progress

victorian bay windowAs you may have seen in my earlier post, the metal baseboard heat covers have now been refinished.  An attempt was made to put up the ceiling fan, but although my husband thought he had changed out the bracket already, he hadn’t.  Due to this, work is limited to the daylight hours right now, since he had already removed the old light fixture.  This is not a big deal because I am participating in a Glidden/Walmart blogger program, to makeover my daughter’s playroom.  I have plenty to do.

ornate ceiling fan

window trimYesterday, I did get back in the bedroom.  I had picked up some molding at the home improvement store, and cut and installed it around the windows in my bay.  I managed to get them caulked and painted , as well.  I case you are wondering, additional trim had to be added to the windows since someone (don’t look at me) ordered the windows a little small.  I actually think it looks pretty cool with the extra detail, but curtains will cover it anyway.

We have a hurricane coming this weekend, so I doubt much will get done over the the next few days.  Hopefully my flooring will come in for the playroom, so I can get that down.  I would like to get that project squared away before putting leveler down to prep the bedroom floor for laminate.

I have been stashing things aside for this room for a few years.  This wall mounted bust is something I got from my mother, she had it hanging in her parlour for many years.
