The o.b. Share It Forward Program

Here in the United States, few of us put much thought into the availability of sanitary protection products.  It is just something we pick up when needed.  This is far from the case in some parts of the world.

Sadly, in many developing countries sanitary protection is considered a luxury item, that too many simply can not afford.  Millions of adolescent girls in these countries suffer negative impact from this lack of protection for their entire lives.  They miss school, and fall behind their male classmates, often eventually dropping out of schooling altogether.  Worse yet, in desperation, some use dangerous substitutes to hygienic sanitary products.

huru logoI would like to share with you the work of a great organization called Huru International , which was started in 2008 to help with this crisis.  The organization has developed a cost-effective crisis solution, with their Huru Kits, which are donated to at-risk girls.  Each kit comes packaged in a backpack style drawstring bag , and contains: 8 reusable sanitary pads, underwear, laundry detergent, waterproof storage bag, instructions to properly use & care for the reusable pads, as well as, HIV/AIDS prevention information.

The o.b. Share It Forward program will donate a minimum of $10,000 to the organization, but we can help raise that number to $25,000 for Huru International, enough to supply 1,000 kits.  The money will be raised through the Share It Forward Facebook application.  For each person who shares the message about Huru International, o.b. will donate a dollar to the cause. If you would like to help raise money for this worthy cause, visit  www.facebook.com/obmightysmall .  Once there “Like” the page, then click “share”.  This small donation of your time, could make a huge difference in a young girl’s life.

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of o.b. and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Give Your Multi-vitamin a Boost with ProNutrients by Centrum #NutritionPossible

pronutrientsI have a very busy and very active four year old.  At 44 years of age, it can sometimes be a daunting task to keep up with my beautiful 3 1/2 ft. supercharged munchkin.  I have also stepped up my health regime a bit after recently becoming a single parent.  I need to do everything I can to ensure, that I am here for her during the coming years.

Taking vitamins has helped me keep pace with her (albeit perhaps a few steps behind), but I wanted something geared toward helping with heart, brain and eye health.  These three areas begin to show signs of wear in our 40′s.  Making sure ample nutrients are available, to these systems just makes good common sense, if you want to maintain a healthful life in your 50′s and beyond.

pronutrients Omega 3 centrumI have been taking a multi-vitamin for quite some time, and sporadically take fish oil supplements & a B-complex.  Over the past month, all I had been taking is the multi.  It seemed time to remedy that, so when Collective Bias asked me to participate in a vitamin shop, it was a great fit for me.

The multi-vitamin I have been taking is the basic version of Centrum.  I was specifically looking to buy Omega 3 ProNutrients by Centrum, and a B-complex containing both B6 and B12 (oddly many don’t).  After perusing the B vitamin section I found one with a formula meeting my specifications.   The ProNutrients were far easier to find.  They were prominently displayed on am end cap.  In addition to Omega 3, ProNutrients also come in Fruit & Veggie and Probiotic supplement versions.

I found these mini capsules much easier to get down than the large fish oil ones I am accustomed too.  They would be a terrific choice for anyone who has difficulty swallowing pills.  Between all the vitamin options Centrum has these days, I would say they quite likely, have the vitamin for most any need you have.

If you would like to try ProNutrients too, check out the Centrum Facebook page for a money-saving $3-off Coupon.

Affordable Probiotics from @SAMSCLUB #DigestiveHealth

probioticI have now been taking Member’s Mark 4X Probiotics for nearly 2 weeks.  Digestive problems have never been a particular issue for me, but ensuring a healthy gut is a good way to help ensure overall health.  Probiotics are also a suggested treatment for individuals with autism.  Some children who take them have seen improvement in their abilities.  Since my daughter is autistic, I thought playing guinea pig myself might be a good idea.

So what was the verdict?  Well to be honest with you, I really didn’t notice a difference, of course there wasn’t really an issue to start with, so any changes would likely be subtle and noticed over a longer span of time.  The good thing is I didn’t find there to be any side negative effects to taking the Member’s Mark 4X Probiotics.  This makes me feel better about the possibility of my daughter taking probiotics sometime in the future, and the affordability of the Members Mark brand would make it an obvious choice.

sams club logoIf you would like to learn more about Member’s Mark affordable probiotics, visit this site http://digestivehealthfor.me/.   Member’s Mark 4X Probiotics are available exclusively at Sam’s Club, and retail for $28.88, considerably less than most competitors, for similarly sized packages.

10 Easy Tips for a Healthier Happier You

Healthy Happy Tips

We all have our little tips and tricks to stay healthy and happy.  Not only does the cumulative effect of these little things add up, but they are painless.  After all the goal is to enjoy your healthy life, not just to be healthy.  Here are 10 little things you can do for a healthier happier life.

  1. When the weather is nice, take a walk.  You will notice things about your neighborhood, you would never see while driving through it, and it is good exercise, as well.
  2. Cut back on the processed foods.  They tend to be loaded with way too much salt and chemicals, and you will feel a sense of accomplishment, when you provide your family with more freshly prepared meals.
  3. Add more whole grains to your diet.  They are a great source of vitamins and fiber.
  4. Take your kids to the park.  Not only will it keep them away from TV & video games for a little while, but the fresh air will be good for all of you.
  5. Plant a vegetable and/or herb garden.  Having fresh pesticide-free veggies on hand is great for healthful eating, and gardening is an effective calorie burner.
  6. Ban High Fructose Corn Syrup from your home.  There is evidence that our bodies don’t process this sweetener the same way it does natural sugars, and it can cause metabolism problems.
  7. Use green cleaners in your home.  I have been trying out many different eco-friendly cleaners lately, and was surprised to find out how truly effective most of them are.  Why expose your family to chemicals, if it isn’t necessary?
  8. Ensure you get enough calcium by drinking  Orange Juice with Calcium, in addition to low fat dairy.  I put it in my spritzers, to counteract the calcium loss, that the CO2 in the carbonation causes. (I put a splash of cranberry juice in them too)
  9. Take a few purposeful minutes to relax each day.  I do it at the end of the day, when I retell the story of our day to my daughter before bed.  Only the good things are included, and I think it makes both of us feel better.
  10. When you start to get frustrated and things just aren’t going your way, remind yourself of 3 things that you are grateful for.  It will help you put things back in perspective.

Introducing Member’s Mark 4X Probiotic #DigestiveHealth

probioticMy Member’s Mark 4X Probiotic samples came in yesterday.  While I don’t have any major digestive issues, I have been hearing some really good things about probiotics, for general health.  There has also been some evidence that probiotic treatment have be quite beneficial for individuals with autism.  My four year old daughter is autistic, and prior to trying a children’s version with her it seemed like a good idea to try it myself first.

Probiotics can be a little expensive, so it is great that Sam’s Club is offering an affordable product, with their Member’s Mark 4X Probiotic.  There are actually higher quantities of the active ingredients in the Mamber’s Mark version, over the leading brand it is compared to.  Now consumers don’t have to hurt their wallet to attend to the health of their digestive system.

To learn more about Member’s Mark 4X Probiotic and your digestive health visit http://digestivehealthfor.me/.  The site has both general product information, stories of real product users and even has a forum.  It is certainly worth a visit if digestive issues sometimes trouble you, or you would just like to learn more about what probiotics do.

I am starting to take them today.  I’ll share my experience with taking them after around 10-14 days.

Under 150 Calories! Shrimp and “Noodles”

shrimp and bean sproutsThis low calorie shrimp and bean sprout (“noodles”) stir fry, is under 150 calories.  Lately,  I’ve been eating several mini-meals through out the day, rather than a more typical meal plan, and it has helped me successfully drop a few pounds.  I try and keep most of these mini- meals under 200 – 300 calories, and avoid adding many beverage calories.

In this Shrimp and “Noodles” dish, bean sprouts take the place of real noodles, so this would work well for those on a low carb diet, as well.  I was surprised the first time I made a bean sprout stir fry, how much they reminded me of noodles, when cooked relatively dry.  Other than a splash of soy sauce, and a minimal amount of sesame oil, a dry seasoning blend is used.

Shrimp and “Noodles” (Bean Sprout) Stir fry

(amounts are per serving)

Ingredients:

1/2 bag of bean sprouts

3 oz. shrimp (bite size pieces)

2-4 leaves of basil (Thai or lime basil would be ideal, but regular sweet basil is fine)

1/2 tsp sesame oil

splash of soy sauce (I use low-sodium version)

generously season with salt free seasoning blend (I used Mrs. Dash Caribbean blend)

  1. Place non-stick wok or skillet on med-high heat.
  2. Put in sesame oil, bean sprouts and salt-free seasoning blend. Stir frequntly.
  3. Once bean sprouts are nearly cooked add the shrimp and soy sauce.  Tear the basil up and drop into the pan.
  4. Stir fry until shrimp are cooked through.
  5. Serve with soy sauce, a splash of citrus juice or a little sriracha hot sauce.

*note:  you will notice that just 3 oz. of shrimp is used in this recipe, while a standard portion of this protein is 4 oz.  This was done because it is a mini-meal, but if you wish to go with the full 4 oz.  the calorie difference will only be +25, so go for it.

Breaking Through the Weight Loss Plateau

weight loss plateau

I have been watching what I eat for a few months, and started working out about a month and a half ago.  Things were progressing well, and weight seemed to be coming off readily, then I hit the dreaded weight loss plateau.  I sat at the same weight for nearly two weeks.  While I was glad I was not regaining any weight, and my clothes did seem to loosen up a little during this time period, it was not showing up on the scale.

Break Weight Loss Plateau

I decided to get serious and break the weight loss plateau.  I had already been finding myself eating more vegetables, but concentrated my diet even more towards vegetarian meals.  I am still eating egg whites, and lean meats and seafood, but veggies have become the bulk of my diet.  I’ve also been eating carbs  more sparsely, and most of those are whole grains.

weight loss plateau gymThe thing that has made the biggest difference for me in overcoming the weight loss plateau is joining a gym.  I never thought I was the sort of person who would ever join a gym, but I have and actually like it.  I find that I work out longer and burn more calories than I do at home.  I think it is a combination of the equipment being more interactive, being able to switch to a variety of machines to cut down on boredom, and the fact that since I drove there I want to make the trip worthwhile.  The gym also offers babysitting services in a kids room.  My daughter loves it, and not having her interrupt my while I am trying to work out because she is bored has really helped.

Everyone will have a little different way of breaking their own weight loss plateau, but this has helped me overcome mine.  The added benefit is that when and if I hit another plateau, I will be able to consult with the staff at the gym to come up with an effective strategy to beat it.

Broccoli Rabe with Caramelized Sweet Onions Recipe (Sauted Rapini)

broccoli rabe and tuna steakThis simple Broccoli Rabe recipe is quick and flavorful.  It makes a wonderful side dish for grilled meats, or as a base for a pasta saute.  Rabe is packed with vitamins and minerals (vitamin A, C, K,  plus, potassium, calcium, and iron), so it fits in well with my health and weight loss endeavors.  Here it is sauteed with caramelized sweet onions, garlic and spices, but I make slightly different variations, depending on what is on hand.

Broccoli Rabe (rapini) is a popular vegetable in my area, due to a large Italian population in the state.  Some of you may also know it by the names: Rapini, Raab, Rapp, Rape, Rappi or Broccoletti  (and various other versions). If you have never eaten Rabe before, it may take a little while to adjust to the bitterness of this green.  I actually wasn’t a fan the first time I ate them, but something about the intense flavor brought me back.  I later realized after cooking them myself, that the preparation I had that first time had a lot to do with me not liking them that first time.

Broccoli Rabe with Caramelized Sweet Onions Recipe (rapini)

Ingredients:

1 lb. broccoli rabe

1/2 sweet onion (rough diced)

1 tbs. olive oil

1 tsp. (or clove) crushed minced garlic

1 tsp. crushed jarred red pepper (use considerably less if dry is all you have)

1 packet of powdered chicken bouillon and 2 tbs water  (or 1 cup broth simmered to reduce by half)

salt, pepper and or salt free seasoning to taste

Directions:

  1. Place skillet on med-high heat.  Add the olive oil.
  2. Saute the onions until they just start to caramelize, then add the broccoli rabe.
  3. Cover.  Stir regularly.  Once rabe is wilted down, cut heat down to simmer, and add the rest of the ingredients.
  4. Allow to simmer at least 15-20 minutes.

To make this into a full meal, you can simply cook it with sausage, bacon or white beans, and mix into a hearty pasta like rigatoni.  Top with some grated Parmesan and you have dinner.
