Success with Goals: The Importance of Viewpoint

success with goalsAs we start winding down the first month of the year, I thought it a good time to take a look at goals, and the difference between the ones we achieve versus those that escape us.  One perennial goal of mine has been to lose weight, eat healthy and stick to an exercise routine.  Now if you were to look at me you would think…poor thing, she failed on that front… but,  not so.

In a lot of ways, goals are what you make of them.  Your viewpoint has almost as much to do with it as actual results.  Did I trim down to a svelte micro-size last year, never eat junk food and passionately workout all the time.  Hell, no.  But on January 1st of this year, I weighed less than I did the year before and felt healthier overall.  I could have made the choice to feel unsuccessful, since I had not attained an ideal goal, or I could celebrate the success I had achieved and restart, building upon the progress I’d already made.

It seems to me that people are far better at being hard on themselves, than treating themselves with a bit of kindness and feeling pride in their achievements.  No matter what your focus may be, whether you have health and weight loss goals, basketball goals, blogging goals, organizational or financial goals… pretty much anything.  Celebrating what you have done right, puts you in the right mindset to stay on a path to progress, rather than allowing negativity to pull you down.

Give yourself a little reward for partial successes, and look at them as stepping stones, instead of failed attempts.  Life in general is seldom an all or nothing experience.  90% of life exists in gray areas, rather than black and white.  It is your choice where you land on that spectrum.

What do you do to keep yourself positive and on track, while striving for your goal of choice?  Do you celebrate with little rewards?

Take Vitamin D to Reduce Risk of Depression

vitamin D and depressionA couple months ago, I wrote about the importance of taking vitamin D supplements for overall health, especially in the winter months.  I started to take the supplement myself around the time I wrote that article, and do feel that it has helped considerably.  I haven’t gotten so much as a head cold, and really haven’t had any “winter blues” at all.

A new study from UT Southwestern Medical Center psychiatrists, has now confirmed a direct correlation between levels of vitamin D and reduced risk of depression.  The association was even more significant among people with a prior history of depression.  The study did not cover whether someone who is already depressed would be likely to have an improvement in mood, by taking supplements, but the likelihood is certainly there.

A Natural Resolution: Crystal Deodorant #CrystalRollOn #CBias

eco friendly natural productsLike many people, I am trying to switch over to more natural products (especially for the new year), I simply don’t want to have more chemicals in my life, than necessary, especially on my skin.   While natural products are better for both my family and the environment, I don’t want to spend significantly more on them. I also don’t have the time to shop specialty stores to buy basic toiletries.  The deodorant I have been using works just fine, but it can be a little drying to the skin at times, and it is not a natural crystal roll on deodorantproduct, so when Collective Bias was looking for bloggers to try out Crystal natural deodorant, I was pleased to participate.

The roll-on version of Crystal deodorant is conveniently located at Walmart.  At my store it was priced at just $3.48, which I thought was quite reasonable for a natural deodorant.  Being readily available at a low price, makes switching a viable option, for me.

Since I now had the deodorant, and was going to write about it anyway, I tried it before writing this post.  This natural deodorant has worked well for me, the past couple days, and I prefer the way it feels on my skin.  I like that it is unscented, and have had no residue on black clothing either.  I’ll buy it again.  That is one thing i can already check off my resolution list for the new year.

The Importance of Vitamin D, Especially in the Winter Months #VitaminD #cbias

Vitamin DMost of us remember learning in school that Vitamin D comes from the sun.  That isn’t quite how it works, the sun activates our bodies to create the vitamin, it doesn’t actually supply it, but the connection is certainly accurate.  There are other sources for the vitamin, but sunshine is an excellent source, which those of us in most parts of the country, don’t get a whole lot of during the cold winter months.  Other sources are egg yolks, fatty fish, liver, mushrooms, yeast, and fortified foods, but even those who eat these foods semi-regularly can be deficient in Vitamin D  With most of us avoiding heavy sun exposure, due to it’s aging effects and skin cancer effects, supplements are more needed than ever before.

choosing the right vitamins to take

The huge amount of vitamin options can be overwhelming.

I had a general understanding that Vitamin D was somehow paired with calcium, as important for bone health, but that was about all I knew of the benefits of this important vitamin, until I looked into it further for this post.  Turns out it not only helps strengthen bones and provides vitamin d supplementprotection from osteoporosis, but adequate levels can also help regulate high blood pressure.  Recent research also indicates that sufficient Vitamin D levels are connected with lower cancer and autoimmune disease risk.  Sounds pretty important to me.

I also found out that Vitamin D deficiency is common not only in those who get very little sun exposure, but also among the elderly, obese and babies who are exclusively breast fed.  Those with certain digestive problems, such as Crohn’s disease are also prone to deficiency.

After doing my research, I went to Walmart, to pick up some of this supplement.  There were plenty of options, but I ended out selecting a 1000 mg. dosage from Nature Made.  Each vitamin provides 250% of the price of vitamin ddaily recommended dosage, even though it was one of the lower dosages available, I thought it would be sufficient.  At just $3.97, that is just over a dollar a month, for piece of mind.

Trim Down for the Holidays with the New Slim Fast …Sephora Giveaway Too (5 Winners)

slim fast logoholiday foodHoliday parties, cookies, pies, and hor d’oeuvres.. oh my!  The holidays can be a bit “expanding” on the waistline, especially for those of us who do a lot of food blogging.  I am making a preemptive strike this year, though.  I will substitute some meals with a bottle of this new Slim Fast, and for most of the rest I will focus on adding lots of veggies and lean protein, as well as, keeping the majority of my carbs to whole grains.

I’m integrating Slim Fast into the plan, because it is quick & easy, and quite frankly tastes pretty darn good.   I am not fond of suffering, the unpalatable…lol.  Lucky for me, I was sent some of the Chocolate slim fast bottlenew bottled Slim Fast to try out.  I found that I do prefer these new bottles & formula, over the cans I have purchased in the past.  My only problem was, that my 4 year old decided it was rather delicious, and promptly handed me her cup, as soon as, I opened one.   I had to share.  Having her around cuts the 180-190 calories per bottle in half.  I am going to pick up a few more packs of Slim Fast this afternoon, including some strawberry flavor.  So, I should be all ready to get on track this week.

If you want to join me in a pre-holiday trim down, or just avoid gaining some holiday weight, stop by the Slim Fast website, and grab a $1.50 off coupon to get you started.

The o.b. Share It Forward Program

Here in the United States, few of us put much thought into the availability of sanitary protection products.  It is just something we pick up when needed.  This is far from the case in some parts of the world.

Sadly, in many developing countries sanitary protection is considered a luxury item, that too many simply can not afford.  Millions of adolescent girls in these countries suffer negative impact from this lack of protection for their entire lives.  They miss school, and fall behind their male classmates, often eventually dropping out of schooling altogether.  Worse yet, in desperation, some use dangerous substitutes to hygienic sanitary products.

huru logoI would like to share with you the work of a great organization called Huru International , which was started in 2008 to help with this crisis.  The organization has developed a cost-effective crisis solution, with their Huru Kits, which are donated to at-risk girls.  Each kit comes packaged in a backpack style drawstring bag , and contains: 8 reusable sanitary pads, underwear, laundry detergent, waterproof storage bag, instructions to properly use & care for the reusable pads, as well as, HIV/AIDS prevention information.

The o.b. Share It Forward program will donate a minimum of $10,000 to the organization, but we can help raise that number to $25,000 for Huru International, enough to supply 1,000 kits.  The money will be raised through the Share It Forward Facebook application.  For each person who shares the message about Huru International, o.b. will donate a dollar to the cause. If you would like to help raise money for this worthy cause, visit  www.facebook.com/obmightysmall .  Once there “Like” the page, then click “share”.  This small donation of your time, could make a huge difference in a young girl’s life.

I wrote this review while participating in a campaign by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of o.b. and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.
