Thanks to Trop 50 for sponsoring my writing about fabulous bloggers. This year Trop50 is granting 50 fabulous wishes. Click here to enter for a chance to win $1,000 to help grant a friend’s wish!

What makes a blogger fabulous?  I guess everyone has a different answer, but for me fabulous-ness is tightly interwoven with creativity.  The  fab five bloggers I have selected ooze creativity from their very pores.  Not only do they present their creations for us to indulge in, but they spark us to inject more creativity into our own blogs and lives.

following in my shoes

The first amazing blogger I would like to introduce you to is Rachel from Following In My Shoes.  On her blog Ms. Rachel quilts together random bits of of her life, excellent photography, healthy living and blogging tips.  She is always changing up something in the design of her blog, and often shares tips with those of us less savvy than herself.  I also liked her focus on homemade goods over the holidays.  Rachel is the kind of girl your wish was your neighbor.

Cleavage Kelly Diels

My next über fantastic blogger is Kelly Diels with her blog Cleavage.  Kelly is a gratuitous and frisky over-sharer, and we all love her for it.  In her blog Cleavage,  she artfully explores the topics of sex, money and single motherhood.  On top of all that, she manages to squeeze in some writing advice for her minions.  Yes,  I really need to read her more often.

the creative junkie andrea chamberlain

I now present to you the queen of over-sharing, The Creative Junkie.  No one else but Andy (Andrea Chamberlain) could make me read about bodily fluids and excretions, and come back for more.  Her self effacing humor, and wacky anecdotal tales are sure to catch you in her web.  When you find yourself reading about the antics of Oliver on a regular basis, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

momma cupcake

If you are prepared for a psychedelic trip into a wonderland of food, my next blogger is a must visit.  Christine Mack (Momma Cupcake) truly worships at the altar of food in her blog, The Cupcake Bandits.  This is not your typical food blog.  While the recipes and photos are delectable, there is an edginess to the writing.   Imagine carrying a wedding cake on a tightrope.. Yeah, it’s like that.  She is also the co-host of Dessert Wars.

made by joel

My final fabulous blogger, is Joel Henriques of Made by Joel.  Yes, I included a man on my list. Joel is a super creative fun dad.  His blog is riddled with pictures of his kids enjoying the handcrafted toys that he makes.  Now here’s the great part, he shares how to make these artful modern toys with his readers.  With Joel’s printable artwork to help you, most of these projects are pretty easy to complete.  Projects like these are what your kid’s will remember when they grow up, not which video game they got for Christmas.

While I often stray from reading blogs, since I am always busy on far too many projects of my own, these bloggers always seem to pull me back.  Their passion for their creative outlets exudes from them in a way, that encompasses the reader.  Now get off my dime store rag, and  go get inspired by them.

Don’t forget to enter the 50 Fabulous Wishes contest for a chance to win $1,000 to support a friend’s wish. I was selected for this Tropicana Trop50 sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do. I received compensation to use and facilitate my post.

2010 Holiday Gift Guides List (Linky)

2010 Holiday Gift Guide List

This linky went up on my Christmas blog over the weekend and there are already some great Holiday Gift Guides listed, with many products to check out for your holiday gift giving.  Lots of opportunities to win Christmas gifts too!

To those adding a link:

  • This linky is for Holiday Gift Guides only. If you are not doing a gift guide, please do not link up.
  • Please link directly to you Holiday Gift Guide, not a particular contest, or homepage.
  • Please wait to list until your Gift Guide is live (it doesn’t need to be complete, but there should be something ready for readers).

*The image buttons are only 125×125, if your Holiday Gift Guide button is larger than that, feel free to use your regular blog button image, or a seasonal picture, as long as you link to your gift guide.

2010 Holiday Gift Guide List

Since many of my blogger friends are also busily working on their holiday gift guides right now, I started a blog hop type link on my Christmas blog, PoorSanta.com.   Today is my Blogaverasary and I am in a giving spirit, so I am also including the linky here.  Please feel free to grab the linky code (right below where you submit) and post, as well.  If you prefer a button, rather than doing a linky post, one is available in the orginal linky post, on the Christmas blog

How to Display Visitor Count on Individual Posts

displaying visitors per post

I have been thinking about adding a visitor count on my individual posts for some time now.  Today, I decided to get it done.

As bloggers, and I assume most of the web know, comments are not much of a measure of the true reach of a blog post.  Granted, controversial posts, will tend to garner more than their fair share of people willing to pipe in on the topic, but commenting takes time.  Non-bloggers are far less likely to leave a comment, yet the likelihood that they visited the post to actually read it is higher.  Many of us also shut down comments, after a certain period of time on our posts, since old posts tend to be spam magnets.

The WordPress plug-in that enabled me to do this is called WP-PostViews.  To use this plug-in, just install, then adjust the settings to block it from tallying your own pageviews and those of bots.  Once that is done, you will insert a small piece of code into your theme, and you should be up and running.  If your theme has hooks, it is super easy, just pop the code in before the post content.  If you have a more traditional theme paste the code in right after the coding for your post header (in the single post file). For more detailed instructions go here –> http://lesterchan.net/wordpress/readme/wp-postviews.html

The plug-in was activated here on Blommi at 2 PM EST  today (Sept. 17, 2010).  Since it of course can’t read traffic retroactively, numbers will seem out of whack for posts which were already up at that time.   This is the first thing I have published, post-install, so it should reflect an accurate count.

I think this is an especially good feature to have on blogs, that do reviews.  What do you think?  Is it giving out too much information?  Should it be an expected standard among bloggers who work with PR?  Is it just blog clutter?

Respecting Boundaries: Are Some Bloggers Crossing Them

I have recently, noticed a growing trend among bloggers, to start sending out unsolicited email newsletters to Google Friend Followers.  At first I naively assumed that I must have inadvertently, failed to unclick an opt-in here or there.  I am sure that is the case in some instances, but it seems that I am getting a new newsletter, from different bloggers every few days now, and I am not thrilled.  I hate to be harsh but if I wanted these emails, I would have become an email subscriber.

Just because Google has given us the ability to mass email our followers, doesn’t necessarily mean that is the best of ideas.   While I can see how it would be tempting to send out a friendly email to all your followers, especially since for many of us our GFC followers significantly outnumber our email subscriptions, it is an activity which borders on spam.  I understand that the bloggers doing this, are just trying to market themselves and stand out in a huge niche, but one of our duties to our readership is to respect the level at which they have chosen to follow us.  Sending an unrequested newsletter, puts the receiver in the uncomfortable position of unsubscribing.

I have an email subscription option readily available for my blog,  and love it when people subscribe.  I don’t currently have a newsletter, but when and if I add one, only those people who make the choice to subscribe will receive it.  This has been the standard procedure among bloggers for sometime now.  Perhaps I just have my head in the sand, but that is the way I feel it should remain.

Just because the gate has been left ajar does not mean we have to walk through it.

What do you think:  Are Google Friends open game, or are mass emails to these followers stepping over a boundry?

Computer Problems

computer troubles

Perhaps I notice it more than any of my readers, but my blog has been a bit “plain” this last week.  There is a reason for the sudden rash of quickie giveaway posts, with stock photos.  My PC was been out of commission.   I’ve been working off my “vintage” laptop in the meantime, thus no photo editing or extensive posts this week.

The whole dismal affair occurred because, I caught a nasty virus on my PC.  I am pretty sure I picked up the virus participating in a blog hop, by the way, so take this as a warning.  BE CAREFUL ABOUT THE LINKS YOU CLICK ON, when you participate in hops and linkys.   Just because someone typed in “warm and fuzzy blog”, does not mean that is the link they actually added.

We ended out having to wipe my hard drive, and I lost a couple programs, and a bunch of images.  I am happy to be up and running again though.  Now to catch up, on the things I couldn’t complete last week.

I’m Throwing Random.org Out the Window : and the winner is…

I just recently started using the new and the winner is… WordPress plug-in and I love it.  No stress about numbering comments (which can be a nightmare), no need to visit random.org, or permanently install one of their number generator widgets.  Just install the plug-in on your WordPress blog, and it will randomly pick the winner for you, right in the dashboard.

Once installed you will now have a box that looks like this under where you select categories and tags.  Just click the box when you put up your giveaway.

and the winner is... dashboard box

When you are ready to select your winner, just click this box.

and the winner is... plug-in

A list of the giveaways you have running will come up. (I didn’t have any contest to pick at the moment, so a non-contest post is being used as an example.)

Click to close comments on the contest you are about to pick.

close comments in and the winner is...

Then generate winner.

and the winner is... random selection

*Mandi wins our admiration for not putting a price on friendship :)

If the entrant picked has not abided by the entry rules, you have the option to select a new winner.  If you have a mandatory entry, and the selected entry is an extra optional entry, just use the searchbox on you comment page to see if the mandatory entry was performed.

This is my new favorite plug-in, and I know many of my bloggy pals have had comment numbering issues.  This plug-in makes that a non-issue.  Immediate easy random winner selection, from a free WordPress plug-in.  Enjoy.

Free WordPress Themes (that aren’t quite so free)

I am a bit of a WordPress theme addict.  Even when my blog uses a theme for a length of time, I am probably trying on others behind the scenes.  Many of my Blogger friends are switching to WordPress, or thinking about it.  The switch leaves them shopping around for a new theme.  Most are not accustomed to paying for hosting and paid premium themes often leave them with sticker shock.  These noobie WordPress users start seeing some rather attractive free themes around, and wonder why all their friends aren’t using them already.

The problem with many top quality “free” WordPress themes, comes in the fine print.  These themes are often funded by the designer selling their own links in the footer.  I am not talking about the common links most designers leave to their own business.   These are sold by the designer to third parties.  Unless you feel comfortable with the possibility of your sweet little mommy blog, having links to casinos, international dating sites, and mesothelioma lawyers sitting at the bottom of the page, proceed with caution.  BTW there will also be notation that comes with the theme stating you are not allowed to remove these links.

There are some great themes out there that do not contain these PR draining, and sometimes questionable links.  If you are concerned about increasing your PR, I do suggest you take a look at the footer code of free themes, prior to using them.  On several occasions, I have discovered “invisible” links.  The designer added these links in the same color as the background color.  This takes out the issue of your readers seeing links that you would not approve of, but they are still there.  Sneaky, very sneaky.

If you are looking for a theme to start off with while finding your perfect match, there are many wonderful options: Thematic, Arras Theme, TypographyWP 1.1 and Atahualpa are all good choices.  All can be installed directly through your WordPress dashboard, and are relatively easy to customize, as well.
