Yes, you did indeed hear me right. CARE knows how to do those things and so much more. These are the sorts of things the innovative minds at CARE have come up with to help those in need achieve sustainable change. After all, putting a band aid on a problem is often not enough. The recurring source of the injury must be fixed.
After That teaser of a headline, I really need to fill you in at least a little on the donuts and fog now don’t I.
This is Biti Rose who joined a CARE Village Savings and Loan Association. Saving just pennies a week, she eventually secured a $2 loan from the group to buy ingredients to make doughnuts to sell. Her popular doughnuts were earning her several dollars each day in profit – more money than she’d ever had in her life. Her children are able to attend school again.
Isn’t it amazing that the cost of a take out cup of coffee could change a family’s life for the better in such a substantial way?
Meet Maria, she lives high in the Ecuadorian cloud forest. She and her neighbors were thrust into extreme poverty due to climate changes in their region.
CARE implemented a program to help families learn to grow organic crops which would thrive in the new climate, techniques to get the most bountiful harvests and helped build small structures which harvest water from the misty air for drinking and washing. Now she and her family, not only have enough to eat, they even have produce leftover to sell at local markets. Maria earns enough for her children’s tuition too.
If you are a gardener like I am you may find this video of Maria’s story particularly interesting.
These are just two stories out of many many more, about how CARE helps people rise out of the misfortunes of poverty. With a bit of help they are now proudly able to care for themselves and their families. Isn’t that what we all want?
